Following the success of its inaugural Book Club gathering in partnership with the Woman’s Civic Club, the Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) is excited to announce the next installment in the series, taking place on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Plagido’s Winery, 570 N. First Road in Hammonton.
Just in time for Halloween, this fall’s featured selection is The Secret History of the Jersey Devil: How Quakers, Hucksters, and Benjamin Franklin Created a Monster by Brian Regal and Frank Esposito. The book explores the fascinating origins of one of New Jersey’s most enduring legends, separating fact from folklore while tracing the surprising history behind the Jersey Devil myth. The evening will feature a live Q&A with the author, followed by a special presentation by Tony DiGerolamo – author, historian, and storyteller – who will share his own insights into the legend, its history, and its lasting place in New Jersey folklore. Guests will also have an opportunity to purchase copies of Tony’s books.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m., giving attendees plenty of time to settle in, purchase a glass of wine, light refreshments, browse Tony’s books, and enjoy conversation before the program begins promptly at 7:00 p.m.
The Book Club series is the vision of Chelsey Cannistra, whose idea for creating a community-centered reading experience was met with an enthusiastic response during its inaugural event. “Thanks to Chelsey’s leadership, our first Book Club was a tremendous success,” said HSH President Eileen Unger. “We’re excited to build on that momentum with an evening that combines history, mystery, great conversation, and two outstanding presenters. We think this one will be even better.”
Readers who would like to get a head start can pick up the book this summer through Amazon or other booksellers in print, eBook, and audiobook formats. Whether you’re fascinated by the Jersey Devil, enjoy New Jersey history, or simply love a good book discussion, this promises to be an entertaining and memorable evening.
