Historical Society of Hammonton Invites Community to July 4 Open House and Seeks Volunteers for 250th Celebration

The Historical Society of Hammonton is inviting residents and visitors to make the museum part of their Independence Day plans during the Town of Hammonton’s 250th Celebration. The Historical Society Museum, located in Veterans Park, will host a special Independence Day Open House on Saturday, July 4, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Admission is free.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Historical Society’s newest exhibition, Marking Milestones, Building a Community, which celebrates the businesses, organizations, and community institutions that have helped shape Hammonton across generations. Through photographs, artifacts, memorabilia, video presentations, interactive elements, and spotlight displays featuring loaned items from local businesses and organizations, the exhibition explores the stories of more than 100 organizations with 50 years or more of history in the community, highlighting how they adapted, evolved, and remained woven into the fabric of Hammonton over time.

The exhibition also connects Hammonton’s local story to the nation’s 250th anniversary, reflecting broader themes of continuity, resilience, immigration, agriculture, entrepreneurship, and community identity.

Families visiting the museum on July 4 can also participate in a family-friendly scavenger hunt designed to encourage visitors of all ages to discover the stories and objects that bring local history to life. The Open House takes place alongside the many activities planned throughout Veterans Park as part of the Town of Hammonton’s 250th Celebration. The day’s festivities will include live music, a community ceremony, the nationwide Bells Across America observance at 2:00 PM, historical encampments, children’s activities, food vendors, and more.

“One of the goals of this exhibition is to help people see that Hammonton’s story is really a story of community,” said Historical Society President Eileen Unger. “The organizations and businesses highlighted in the exhibition endured because people cared enough to build them, support them, and pass them along to future generations. The 250th celebration is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on that shared history while creating new memories together.”

The Historical Society is also seeking volunteers to assist during the July 4 Open House. Opportunities include greeting visitors inside the museum, helping with the scavenger hunt, staffing an outdoor information table, and assisting guests as they explore the exhibits. Even an hour of volunteer time can make a meaningful difference. No previous experience is necessary, just a friendly smile and a willingness to help.

Anyone interested in volunteering for any portion of the day is encouraged to contact the Historical Society at info@historicalsocietyofhammonton.org.
