Historic “Plan of Hammonton” Enters Final Phase of Restoration

The Historical Society of Hammonton’s rare 1856 “Plan of Hammonton” has almost completed its conservation journey at the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia. The work, led by Senior Paper Conservator Heather Henry, has restored the map’s brilliance and stabilized it for future generations.

The project included surface cleaning, removal of yellowed varnish, repair of the original paper, and creation of a sealed archival frame. “Beneath two discolored layers of varnish and grime, we uncovered a surprisingly vibrant watercolor,” said Henry. “Seeing the true colors emerge was incredibly rewarding. The map is now both brighter and far more stable, ensuring its preservation for decades to come.”

The project has been supported entirely through community fundraising and sponsorships. Gold Sponsors include Cape Atlantic Urgent Care, the Hammonton Education Association, and Truist Bank.

“The response from our community has been tremendous,” said Dave Murphy, Historical Society Trustee and member of the Fundraising Committee. “This restoration isn’t just about preserving paper and ink. It’s about honoring Hammonton’s story and the people who continue to care about where we came from.”

In addition to the gold sponsors, the Society also gratefully acknowledges the generosity of our Silver Sponsors: Bethany Associates, Crowley and Carr Real Estate, Duke & Diane Bates, In Honor of John E. Jacobs, Sr., Hammonton Historic Preservation Commission, Joseph & Rose Arena, Life Mission Training Center, Louis & JoAnn Pantalone, NJM Insurance Group, and the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society.

After the restored Plan of Hammonton returns home, it will be permanently installed in Town Hall alongside a recognition plaque honoring all who made the project possible. An unveiling event will be held for contributors to celebrate the completion of the restoration.
