Monthly Speaker Series Presentation – Bridging Communities, Presented by Ivette Guillermo-McGahee

The Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) presents another fun FREE-to-the-public Speaker Series event on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Canoe Club Senior Center, Hammonton Lake Park.

Our speaker will be Ivette Guillermo-McGahee, who will present a presentation on bridging communities. All events are free and you don’t need to RSVP.

Born in Mexico and raised in a Deaf family, Ivette is a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA) with two Deaf siblings, giving her a deep appreciation for the resilience that can emerge from adversity.

Ivette’s mission through AIC is to empower families to flourish, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth, compassion, and practical mindfulness.

Ivette combines her role as CEO of AIC with significant contributions to public health and environmental preservation, serving as an advisor to the New Jersey Public Health Institute, a member of the NJ RWJF’s Jenga Council, Healthy NJ 2030, and as a trustee at the Pinelands Preservation Alliance.

She is a licensed professional counselor, an approved clinical supervisor, and holds an MA in Mental Health Counseling from Gallaudet University, Washington D.C.

Throughout her life, Ivette has lived in between worlds: Deaf and Hearing, Affluent and Poor, Immigrant and Native, Documented and Undocumented, White and Latino, etc.

She will share how she has navigated these constant changes in social context; the difficulties and opportunities she has encountered and what has helped expand her capacity to engage with an increasingly diverse and complex environment.

The Historical Society of Hammonton is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich, multi-cultural social, economic, and political heritage of our town and its people. Our mission is to increase awareness of Hammonton’s rich history and to establish public access by collecting, conserving, interpreting, and promoting it to the widest possible audience.

Our Museum, built in 1887, is a treasure in itself. Formerly the Hammonton Town Hall, it also served as a Town Library and Kindergarten. Located in Hammonton Veterans Memorial Park, it is open to the public on Tuesdays from 10 AM to Noon and Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM.

We are always looking for new member and volunteers, even if you’re new to Hammonton. Volunteering with us is a fun way to learn about and appreciate our great town. We uncover exciting new bits of Hammonton history every week! Our Museum also sells many books highlighting local history, including out-of-print titles. All proceeds support the Historical Society of Hammonton.
