SUMMARY:Speaker Series Presentation - Lost Wonders in the Pines; Amatol Munitions & the World's Fastest Speedway
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) will hold its FREE-to-the-public Speaker Series on Thursday\, May 4\, 2023\, at 7 PM at the Canoe Club\, Hammonton Lake Park. \n\n\nGreg White\, HSH President\, will speak about one of the most exciting but near-forgotten periods in Hammonton history. \nHidden in the pines off Moss Mill Road\, two of the most incredible feats of engineering sprung up\, each almost overnight. One employed a self-contained “city” of nearly 10\,000\, larger than Hammonton itself\, and the other drew crowds of 60-90\,000 from throughout the Northeast to celebrate man’s latest freedom and passion\, the automobile! \nBy the end of World War I\, 25% of all the bombs\, shells\, grenades\, and bullets used by the Allies were produced here at “Amatol” by the Atlantic Loading Co.\, playing a major role in ending The Great War.  The explosive force contained within this facility could easily have leveled Hammonton and the surrounding area should any major accident or act of sabotage have taken place!  Then\, just 5-6 years later\, the 1\,000 structures built were nearly gone. Only a small handful of buildings remain today. \nThen\, just 8 years later\, the fastest speedway in the world at the time was built on the same land\, now called “Speedway\, NJ.” Suitably closing out the “Roaring Twenties\,” this amazing track was also gone within a few years. Many of the homes from that period in the Hammonton area were built with lumber from this incredible facility! \n\n\nIf you can’t attend the presentation\, come in and play back recordings of this and dozens of other past presentations. Monthly meetings and presentations will continue the first Thursday of each month through June\, resuming again in the fall. \nFunding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission\, a division of Cultural Affairs within the Department of State\, through funds administered by the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.

DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) will hold its FREE-to-the-public Speaker Series on Thursday\, April 13\, 2023\, at 7 PM at the Canoe Club\, Hammonton Lake Park. \n\nMr. William H. Parkhurst will bring in a number of historical items from his home\, some of which will soon find a home in the HSH Museum in the coming months. This is exciting news as the Parkhurst family was among the first settlers into the Hammonton area in the original New England migration over 150 years ago!\n\nBill\, a life-long resident and long-time member and officer of the Historical Society\, owned and operated a very successful farm supply business for many years on White Horse Pike\, and still interacts with many of our local farmers. For all of these reasons\, one would be hard-pressed to find anyone more in touch with our history and community!\n\nMembers are also encouraged to bring in an item or two that you might want to share with the group (no need to donate to the museum\, this is show and tell).\n\n\nIf you can’t attend the presentation\, come in and play back recordings of this and dozens of other past presentations. SUMMARY:Speaker Series Presentation - Speaker Series Presentation - Dr. Samantha S. Nivison\, 19th Century Healer and Sanitarium Founder\, Presented by Deborah White
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) will hold its FREE-to-the-public Speaker Series on Thursday\, March 2\, 2023\, at 7 PM at the Canoe Club\, Hammonton Lake Park. \nDr. Samantha S. Nivison\, a 19th Century Healer and Founder of Hammonton’s Summit Grove Place Sanitarium\, was one of Hammonton’s most notable\, and possibly maligned\, residents of the late 1800’s. Dr. Nivison fought to save the most vulnerable\, including foundlings from New York and Philadelphia\, but was cast off by “proper” Victorian society. A pioneering female physician at the forefront of holistic care\, Dr. Nivison’s story is largely unknown and misunderstood by many.\n\nOur featured speaker is Deborah K. White\, HSH’s Museum Curator and retired respiratory therapist and pulmonary function technologist. Deborah previously supervised the Pulmonary Function Lab at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital & Mercy Hospital in St\, Louis. Deborah earned her BS in Forest Zoology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (Syracuse University) and an AAS in Respiratory Therapy from SUNY Upstate Medical College (Syracuse\, NY). She has contributed to and authored several chapters and peer-reviewed articles on pediatric pulmonary function testing\, respiratory physiology\, and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).\n\nIf you can’t attend the presentation\, come in and play back recordings of this and dozens of other past presentations. Monthly meetings and presentations will continue the first Thursday of each month through June\, resuming again in the fall. \nFunding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission\, a division of Cultural Affairs within the Department of State\, through funds administered by the Atlantic County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.
