SUMMARY:Monthly Speaker Series Presentation - The Art and History of Duck Decoy Carving
DESCRIPTION:The Historical Society of Hammonton (HSH) presents another fun FREE-to-ALL Speaker Series event on Thursday\, March 6\, 2025\, at 7:00 PM at the Canoe Club Senior Center\, Hammonton Lake Park. No pre-registration required. \n\nOur speaker\, J.P. “Jamie” Hand\, is a master decoy carver from South Jersey. Hand will discuss the history and tradition of duck decoy carving\, demonstrate carving techniques\, and showcase the detailed artistry involved in crafting these functional works of folk art. Decoy carving has deep roots in South Jersey\, dating back to the early settlers who relied on skillfully handmade cedar decoys for waterfowl hunting. Over generations\, the craft has evolved into a cherished tradition\, blending artistry with a way of life that reflects the region’s enduring relationship with nature. Join us for this fascinating presentation and live demonstration! \nJ.P. “Jamie” Hand is a lifelong Cape May County resident\, living with his wife\, Gwen\, and son\, Fritz\, on Goshen Farm. A master decoy carver for nearly 50 years\, he has dedicated his life to preserving and advancing this traditional craft. Beyond carving\, he is a respected historian and author\, specializing in the Revolutionary War era and the exploits of privateers along the New Jersey coast. His book\, Cape May Navy\, explores the conflicts between British merchant vessels and privateer captains in the Delaware Bay. A sought-after speaker\, Jamie has lectured across New Jersey on both decoy carving and maritime history. He is a past president and trustee emeritus of the Cape May County Historical and Genealogical Society and longtime editor of its annual journal. \n\nThe presentation begins at 7:00 PM\, following the HSH Monthly Membership Meeting at 6:00 PM\, open to all. If attending just the lecture\, we recommend arriving around 6:45-6:50 PM. Refreshments will be available.\n\n\n\nThe Historical Society of Hammonton is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich\, multi-cultural social\, economic\, and political heritage of our town and its people. Our mission is to increase awareness of Hammonton’s rich history and to establish public access by collecting\, conserving\, interpreting\, and promoting it to the widest possible audience. \nOur Museum\, built in 1887\, is a treasure in itself. Formerly the Hammonton Town Hall\, it also served as a Town Library and Kindergarten. Located in Hammonton Veterans Memorial Park\, it is open to the public on Tuesdays from 10 AM to Noon and Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM. \nWe are always looking for new member and volunteers\, even if you’re new to Hammonton. Volunteering with us is a fun way to learn about and appreciate our great town. We uncover exciting new bits of Hammonton history every week! Our Museum also sells many books highlighting local history\, including out-of-print titles. All proceeds support the Historical Society of Hammonton.
